Around 300 police officers demonstrated this Monday morning in Brussels in reaction to the conviction of three of their colleagues in the case of Sabrina and Ouassim, two young people who died during a chase on May 9, 2017. The three police officers were found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to terms of 5 to 10 months in prison, with half of the sentence suspended for this case. Some members of the police do not agree and believe that the three police officers were only doing their job. “With the judgment that has been rendered, it is a sword of Damocles that we will find hanging over the heads of our colleagues who will wonder whether they should do it or not. Perhaps some of them will make the decision to abstain rather than react“, says Anthony Turra, permanent secretary at the CSC police.
“We are still here with a certain function, if we can no longer exercise it as it should and as we have learned, I don’t see what we are doing there. We will just witness the crimes, if we don’t stop them, what good are we?“, explains Sylvie Evenepoel, president of the SLFP of the Brussels region.
The families of the two young people hope that the police will accept the judgment and that they will not appeal the decision.
