Justice for Maradona: Eight People on Trial for His Death

2023-11-25 08:59:00

Eight people will be tried for the death of Diego Maradona, which marks three years this Saturday. These are the members of the medical team that cared for the idol during his last weeks of life during the home confinement that he had in the country of Tigre.

The accused are Leopoldo Luque (neurosurgeon and Maradona’s personal doctor), Agustina Cosachov (psychiatrist), Ricardo Almirón (nurse), Gisella Madrid (nurse), Nancy Forlini (doctor at Swiss Medical), Mariano Perroni (chief nurse), Carlos Díaz (psychologist) and Pedro Di Spagna (clinical doctor).

The crime they are accused of is “homicide with possible intent”, which provides penalties of between 8 and 25 years in prison.

The judge of Guarantees 2 of San Isidro, Orlando Abel Díaz, brought the case to trial in June of last year. Among his reasons, he pointed out that the eight defendants did not comply “with the mandate to act that good medical practice placed in their heads.” He also considered that they were “guarantors” of Ten’s health and that, although they were able to “reverse” his cardiac condition, they did not do so.

For prosecutors, meanwhile, Maradona’s medical team was “deficient”, “reckless” and “indifferent”, since it knew that the former soccer player might die and did nothing to prevent it.

Leopoldo Luque

Leopoldo Luque is the best-known name among all those accused of causing the death of Diego Armando Maradona. The neurosurgeon in charge of the idol’s safety and well-being was one of those most responsible for his deterioration.

Luque was the one who recommended surgical intervention on Maradona’s head when it was neither a safe nor an urgent procedure. Furthermore, in the chats and audios you can see the aberrant contempt with which he spoke regarding 10.

“I am ashamed of some messages I sent. “I regret it and apologize to the family and the people who loved him very much,” she said in interviews. However, he assured: “I am not afraid of going to prison.”

Agustina Cosachov

Agustina Cosachov was Diego Armando Maradona’s psychiatrist and was responsible for indicating the medication he took. She also signed the discharge from the Olivos Clinic. She is one of the people who are most involved in the cause.

In addition, he adds another accusation: ideological falsehood, this is because he signed certificates of Maradona’s mental fitness without even visiting him. He also used Diego’s signature without his consent on documents.

Ricardo Almiron

Ricardo Omar Almirón was Diego Armando Maradona’s nurse and, like many of those who surrounded the Argentine idol in his last days, he has an extensive medical record.

The 40-year-old man had a particular hobby: he participated in a murga group in the City of Buenos Aires. In 2022, Almirón was accused and prosecuted for sexual abuse, but the name of his victim was not released, it was only confirmed that she was a partner in the murga.

According to what was written in the complaint, “he took the girl by force” and because “she was very drunk” she never gave her consent or realized that she was having sexual relations. Even from La Colectiva Murguera they stated that it was not the first case and that “many girls woke up in a bed next to the accused without remembering anything.”

Gisela Madrid

Dahiana Gisela Madrid was one of Diego Armando Maradona’s nurses. She is 36 years old and lives in Villa Bosch. Madrid’s role in caring for Diez was key and she was even the one who performed CPR on him when he was found dead. “When I found him, the body was hot,” she declared.

The truth is that their relationship was not easy and Diego fired her on her second day of work, although she stayed for a week since he had no replacement. In addition, she was the person who gave the version of a blow to the head that Maradona suffered the Wednesday before his death.

Furthermore, Madrid lied in his statements since he said that he heard Diego moving around the room at 7:30, but that he did not come in and let him rest. However, in the medical report he stated that he had entered the room. In court, she made it clear that she was forced to lie by the company that hired her.

Nancy Forlini

Nancy Edith Forlini is a doctor, she is 53 years old and was in charge of the Home Care Management of the private medicine company Swiss Medical. This area provided care services to Maradona in the country of Tigre following the last operation to which he underwent.

In a written statement he made within the framework of the investigation, Forlini argued that they only asked him to organize a nursing service and therapeutic companions who would be with the former soccer player 24 hours a day. He also pointed out Luque and Cosachov as those who made all the decisions regarding the treatments.

Mariano Perroni

Mariano Ariel Perroni is 41 years old and was Maradona’s nursing coordinator. He worked for the company Medidom -subcontracted by Swiss Medical-, which provided nursing services to Maradona in the country of Tigre.

In his investigative statement in June 2021, Perroni assured that he never had contact with the Diez and that his tasks were only administrative. Furthermore, he complicated Cosachov and Forlini. Regarding the latter, he said that he “maintained the indication not to disturb or invade” the patient.

He also said that he had little information regarding Maradona’s health condition and that the room in Tigre’s country house was not suitable for home confinement since it did not have the necessary equipment.

Carlos Diaz

Carlos “Charly” Díaz is the psychologist who treated Maradona at the request of Matías Morla. He is 30 years old, he studied at the University of Salvador and his Linkedin profile says that since 2015 he has had a job at the Integra Civil Association. He specializes in addictions and also in severe mental pathologies. He is a member of the Argentine Center for Addictions, a teacher and has a master’s degree in drug addiction from USAL and another in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from the Higher Institute of Psychological Studies of Barcelona.

“I get (to Maradona) through Morla. He calls me because one of his drivers was a patient of mine for more than three years in a very successful treatment, who later also recommended me to other people with similar problems. As a result of my specialty, Matías Morla called me to see Diego, whom I saw for the first time on October 26, four days before his birthday, and there was a very particular event, which was the day he was discharged from the Clinic. “Olive trees,” he said some time ago.

And he added: “Many things caught my attention from what I saw. First of all, the fact that a patient lives with employees and not with his family is something that catches my attention. This is the first time I have seen this in clinical practice. On the other hand, at the meeting at the Olivos Clinic, where everyone was present, some of his relatives did not participate at any other time during the treatment. Not a single day,” he completed.

Investigators understood that Díaz was an important part of the medical team that treated Maradona in his last weeks of life. However, in his statement before the Court, the psychologist assured that his intervention in the treatment of addictions was successful and that “in no way might it have influenced” the death of the Ten.

Pedro of Spain

He is a clinical doctor and is 49 years old. He was part of the WhatsApp chat in which the nurses from the Medidom company gave the daily report and informed their superiors of any eventuality that occurred with Maradona’s care. Forlini, Perroni, Madrid and Almirón participated in that conversation.

Di Spagna had to do the clinical follow-up of Diez’s home confinement. Prosecutors charged him with having seen the patient only once and for not having carried out the checks properly.

“The only thing we do and as a suggestion, let’s cover the legal part. May God have a good weekend and be as good as possible. But if there is any unfavorable event, we are covered by the fact that the exam might not be done, nor complementary exams requested for reasons beyond our control,” Di Spagna had written in the chat just a few days before Maradona’s death and following a report that warned that the former soccer player was refusing to receive visits and medical attention.
