Justice for Cathy Dubois: Solidarity and Fraternity in the Face of Tragedy

“Solidarity nourishes the roots, from which fraternity is woven”, this quote from the Algerian poet Bihmane Belattaf, which the organizer of the white march this Friday evening likes to recall, inspires the spirit of this event that Nathalie Martin, Cathy’s friend, wishes she never had to set up.

The horror in Tournai: Cathy Dubois was very violently beaten before being thrown into the Scheldt

Which, it is necessary to recall, was born from the significant mobilization which was put in place following the announcement of the savage killing – the words are not too strong – of the owner of the restaurant Une Little desire, Cathy Dubois, whose body was discovered in the Scheldt last Monday. We then quickly learned that Cathy had been severely beaten before being thrown into the river.

On the faces of the participants – family members, friends, but also people who did not know Cathy personally – sadness, emotion, incomprehension, but also anger might be read. Even if the time was more for contemplation, some took advantage of this demonstration to question certain political choices, particularly in terms of security.

Answers will be given to them but certainly not once morest the backdrop of an emotional tsunami such as that caused by the atrocious death of this young woman who was only asking to enjoy life.

This is also the reason why several politicians – they will recognize themselves – told us that they had chosen to attend the funeral of the victim rather than this white march which must above all, as the poet Bellataf specified , register as a gesture of solidarity and fraternity.

The impressive procession, which left the Place de Lille, passed through the Grand-Place before heading towards the belfry, the Place de l’Évêché and the Quai Notre-Dame to reach Place Saint-Pierre and the alley d’Ennetières too small to accommodate the whole crowd.

A body spotted in the Scheldt in Kain: it is indeed the body of Cathy Dubois, restaurateur who disappeared this Saturday

A parade which took place in an impressive silence which was only interrupted at the end of the route by speeches. Cathy’s friend, very moved, then invited the participants to release their balloons. A particularly moving and poignant moment at the end of which everyone might, if they wished, leave a word in one of the registers provided for the occasion.
