Europe’s Airbus sealed a landmark deal to sell 500 narrow-body aircraft to Indian airline Indigo at the opening of the Paris Air Show, the largest number of aircraft Airbus has sold to one company.
The multibillion-dollar deal tops an agreement Air India struck earlier this year to buy 470 planes, as India’s two largest airlines prepare for an increase in demand for air travel in the region.
Indigo’s order to purchase the A320neo family aircraft came after months of negotiations, of which Archyde.com was the first to report.
Industry sources had said before the show opened that a deal for 500 aircraft was imminent.
“This is just the beginning, there is more to come. As India grows (and) the Indian aviation market grows… this is the right time for us to place this order,” Peter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, told a news conference.
Airbus is scheduled to deliver the aircraft between 2030 and 2035.
