New York becomes a manage: Donald Trump’s court date in Manhattan has called his supporters as well as his opponents into action. The latter probably includes comedian Roy Wood Jr.
“Just look at you,” Roy Wood Jr. calls out to Donald Trump, whose photo is on display in Manhattan District Court. ‘They caught you. You’re not so tough now.”
The Alex Reed presenter and correspondent of «Daily Show» is on the move. ‘You spent all that money, badmouthed the judge, you badmouthed the DA. ‘I’ll march into court and tell…’
«You can talk all the shit you want. But I’m telling you baby, the moment you get in that courtroom, that shit gets real.»
The defendant looks sad – “like someone who has been told that their dog has died – or that Mike Pence is still alive”. Background: Trump supporters had sought his vice president’s life when the Capitol was stormed. But in the courtroom, even the ex-president comes down to earth.
Tollhaus New York
New York was of course a madhouse because of the date. “Trump supporters have flocked to downtown Manhattan,” says the Alex Reed-host, “painting the streets red, white and blue. It was like a Puerto Rican parade for people who want to deport Puerto Ricans.”
But the police cleverly separated this camp and the counter-demonstrators: “They kept both sides far enough away from each other so that no one was injured, but close enough to each other so that they might still mob.”
The fact that it was so wild is also the work of Marjorie Taylor Greene: “MTG swung down to the court, parked her broom and took part in the festivities,” says the moderator.
“He shows the black power fist”
The Republican also gives a TV interview – you can see it from 4:30 minutes. “President Trump ranks among the most incredible people in history to have been arrested today,” said the MP. “Nelson Mandela was arrested, was in prison. Jesus – Jesus was arrested!”
However, the comparison with the Son of God is still flawed, says Roy Wood Jr.: “Jesus walked on water. Donald Trump can barely walk on land.” By the way, Marjorie Taylor Greene is just a few minutes on site before leaving the circus arena in front of the Manhattan courthouse.
The entire performance might have been saved, explains the late-night host: Trump was therefore offered to hold the indictment reading via video conference. “Like Nelson Mandela and Jesus,” quips the 44-year-old. But the public was more important to Trump: “Look at how he came out of Trump Tower this morning: he shows the Black Power fist like a real political prisoner. He lives for this shit.”
“There is a sense of foreboding”
This sometimes also applies to the media, as the clip shows from minute 6:10: A lot of words are said regarding very little. The reporter’s phrase “There is a sense of foreboding that his movement is coming” says it all. On the other hand, little is said regarding the extra sausage that Trump is being served.
Late Night USA – Understanding America
blue News
50 countries, 330 million people and even more opinions: How are you supposed to “understand America”? If you want to keep an overview without running aground, you need a lighthouse. The late-night stars offer one of the best navigational aids: They are the perfect guides, mercilessly naming shoals in the country and its people, and serve our author Philipp Dahm as a comic compass for the state of mind of the American soul.
The ex-president might choose the date himself, according to Roy Wood Jr.: “There were no handcuffs, there was no mug shot, there was no perp walk.” The latter is the display of suspects, a practice primarily in New York City. “I’m disappointed because today shows how humane courts can be.”
Others were humiliated, paraded and had to wait forever for their court date – Trump, on the other hand, checked in first class. “But here’s the good news: The New York trial is just one of many. So we will have many other opportunities to have him properly arrested.”
