Jürgen Klopp: “That would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football”

The former Liverpool coach, who has announced a one-year break, emphasised this at an international coaching congress in Würzburg. When asked what requests his agent was currently passing on to him, Klopp replied: “Nothing. Nothing job-wise. No club, no country. A few people must not have heard that part.”

When the moderator specifically confronted Klopp with a possible interest from European Championship finalists England, the 57-year-old German said: “It would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if someone said I’d make an exception for you.” The job at the “Three Lions” is vacant after Gareth Southgate resigned following the second European Championship final defeat in a row.

According to Klopp, he doesn’t even know if he wants to return to coaching at all. “I’ll do something. I’m too young to just do padel tennis and grandchildren. Will that be coaching again? I would actually rule that out at the moment. Let’s see how it will look in a few months. Nothing is happening at the moment,” said the star coach.

“I’m probably the record Silver Medal holder”

Klopp chatted at the event in shorts and an unbuttoned shirt – also about his three lost Champions League finals with Borussia Dortmund (2013) and Liverpool (2018 and 2022). “I’m probably the record silver medal holder in the Champions League. I’ve lost more Champions League finals than most people have played in,” joked Klopp.

In 2019, however, he also managed a major coup in the premier class with Liverpool. The following year, Klopp led the traditional club, for which he worked from 2015 to 2024, to its first championship title in 30 years.
