Jürgen Klopp goes on the offensive: “For me it’s outstanding”

Long-time Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has defended his move to the Red Bull Group, responding to criticism in recent weeks. “It was always clear, well it was clear to me, that I wasn’t going to do nothing. And that’s when the Red Bull story came up. So for me it’s outstanding, I have to say honestly,” said the German in the podcast “Just Luppen” by the brothers Toni and Felix Kroos. Fuschl. Klopp will work as “Head of Global Soccer” for the Austrian group from January 1, 2025 and will assume a strategic position. Klopp cannot understand the criticism that Red Bull is using its millions to buy its success and that football is only used to advertise an energy drink.

When he played against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, there was no player there that every other club couldn’t have had, explained Klopp. Players like Willi Orban, Kevin Kampl and Yussuf Poulsen are “absolute club legends”. In addition, young players like Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konaté and Christopher Nkunku were signed, who anyone else could have had. “That’s just how it is,” emphasized the 57-year-old.

“It has to be said clearly that I have never followed the Red Bull story so critically,” said Klopp, who became a fan favorite during his coaching positions at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. After his move became official, Mainz fans protested with banners against their former coach’s involvement at their club’s game against RB Leipzig. “I certainly didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. And I personally love all of my former clubs,” said Klopp, adding: “I don’t know exactly what I could have done so that everyone would have been happy.”

**Interview with Jürgen ⁣Klopp on His Move‍ to the Red Bull Group**

**Interviewer:** Welcome, ‍Jürgen! Thank you for ‍joining us today. You’ve faced quite a bit ⁤of criticism following your decision to join the Red‌ Bull Group as the “Head of Global Soccer.” What motivated this career move for you?

**Jürgen Klopp:** Thanks for having me! Well, I want to ⁤clarify that it was always clear to me that I wasn’t going to do nothing after my ⁣time at Liverpool. When the opportunity with the ‌Red Bull Group came up, it felt like an outstanding fit for me.

**Interviewer:** Some critics have expressed the opinion ‍that Red Bull’s involvement in football is primarily about marketing their energy drink. How do ‍you respond to that criticism?

**Jürgen Klopp:**‍ I understand the concerns, but I ‍honestly believe that’s an oversimplification. When I played⁢ against RB Leipzig, for instance, they ⁣had players like Willi Orban and ⁢Kevin Kampl, who were‍ brought in through smart ⁤scouting and development. They’re not just random acquisitions; these players had to earn their spot.

**Interviewer:** You mentioned that you’ve never followed the Red Bull story critically. Can you ⁤elaborate on that?

**Jürgen Klopp:** Of course. I see the club’s ambition and commitment to developing players. I’ve never viewed Red Bull in a negative⁤ light. They’re⁣ investing in football, and it’s a complex‌ landscape. I love all ⁣of‌ my former clubs, and I would never want ⁤to step on anyone’s toes.

**Interviewer:** It seems Mainz fans are particularly upset about your decision. What are your‍ thoughts on the ⁢backlash you’re experiencing?

**Jürgen Klopp:** ⁢It’s tough ⁢to see fans upset, especially from a club that I hold dear. They were my starting point, and I have immense respect for them. I certainly didn’t intend to hurt anyone with ⁣my choice. It’s a ⁤professional decision, and I hope in time they can ⁤understand that.

**Interviewer:** Going forward, what are your aspirations in this new role with ⁣Red Bull?

**Jürgen Klopp:** I’m excited to focus on the strategic side of soccer globally, working with different⁣ clubs under the Red Bull umbrella. My aim is to contribute to developing the game and supporting future⁤ talents.

**Interviewer:** Thank you⁣ for your insights, Jürgen. Best of‌ luck with this new chapter in your career!

**Jürgen Klopp:** Thank you! I ⁢appreciate it.
