Jürgen Klopp extends Liverpool FC: A signal to Manchester City and Co. at the perfect time

World club champions, Premier League winners, Champions League winners.

Since Jürgen Klopp signed on as team manager in October 2015, Liverpool FC has already placed a total of five trophies in the winners’ showcase.

An end to the success story is currently not in sight. On the contrary: The probability that several more trophies will be added in the future increased many times over on Thursday.

Pacemaker and genius: This is how Thiago makes himself indispensable for Klopp

“There’s something to report. I’m staying two more years”, Klopp announced his early contract extension until 2026 full of joy in a video released by the club: “I love our club. I hope that we will all enjoy the time together.”

A message that should have caused enthusiasm among the Reds supporters, where Klopp already enjoys legendary status.

Klopp throws career plan over

It wasn’t long ago that Klopp once again ruled out extending his contract, which expired in 2024. “My plan is to stay until 2024, and then I’ll say: thank you very much!” he explained just a few weeks ago.

After a conversation with his wife Ulla, however, that long-cherished plan was thrown overboard, as Klopp revealed. “It was actually a private agreement. But then we sat at the kitchen table and Ulla said: I don’t see us leaving the city in 2024.” Already on Thursday, Klopp justified his decision with similar words: “Ulla wants to stay. And what does a good husband do when his wife wants to stay? He stays.”

Why not? In his six and a half years in Liverpool to date, Klopp has written a success story that is second to none. The 54-year-old has managed to transform a long-established club that was threatening to become insignificant in the Premier League into one of the most successful clubs on the continent.

“I couldn’t appreciate more what has happened here over the past few years,” said the former Borussia Dortmund coach on Friday, continuing with his declaration of love: “I never thought I’d find another place where I feel so welcome and useful. It feels absolutely good to be a Red.”

Klopp extension at the perfect time

Klopp’s whereabouts on Merseyside is also a clear signal: to national and international competition.

It can be assumed that even with a possible departure of Mohamed Salah, who recently was named the best player in the Premier Leaguewill remain a contender for the title in all competitions for years to come thanks to their world-class squad coupled with Klopp’s tactical skills.

As is the case this season.

Klopp’s contract extension could therefore come at just the right time to give his side, who are now unbeaten in 11 competitive games, a morale boost as they head towards the end of the season.

Liverpool: Quadruple hovers above it all

After all, the expectations are greater than ever before. The word “quadruple” has been hovering over Anfield Road like the sword of Damocles for weeks.

After the League Cup win Liverpool still has a chance of three more titles. The Reds will meet Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 14 at Wembley Stadium. Klopp is still missing that title in his CV.
In the Champions League is the champion of 2019 after the 2-0 win in the first leg in the semifinals against Bayern conquerors FC Villarreal poised to advance to the final in Paris on May 28, where Manchester City could be waiting in a possible final. Once again.

Klopp doesn’t want to know anything about the quadruple

Pep Guardiola’s team is also Klopp’s men’s big rivals in the Premier League. The Skyblues are just a measly point ahead of Liverpool with five games to go.

Although the chances of a possible quadruple are undoubtedly better than ever, Klopp still doesn’t want to know anything about it. “Wet our pants just before the toilet is still weeded, so being close doesn’t help,” said Klopp in his inimitable way after his team’s 2-0 win against Villarreal on “DAZN” Microphone.

There are still eight real “finals” left for Liverpool on the way to that historic triumph. The Reds have to play the immensely important league game at Newcastle United on Saturday (1:30 p.m.), which is why Klopp has no time at all to think about any titles, let alone the quadruple.

“We’re trying to get through the situation as best we can. We’re trying to help the lads stay fresh,” emphasized Klopp, adding: “It’s already been a great season.”

Every further title would be the culmination of that successful season. The fact is, there would still be a little room in the Liverpool FC display case for more silverware.
