News from Thursday’s World Cup

Gold for Switzerland at the start of the World Cup! On Thursday, Stefanie Grob left the entire competition behind in the supreme discipline downhill and was crowned world champion. The 18-year-old relegates Vicky Bernard from Italy to second place by a measly 3 hundredths of a second, while Pernille Lydersen from Norway wins bronze, 35 hundredths behind.

After Olympic champion Corinna Suter (2014) and Juliana Suter (2019), Grob is the third Swiss junior world champion in the downhill in the last ten years.

Hiltbrand goes downhill bronze

In the men’s downhill, Slovenia’s Rok Aznoh dominates the competition and has a superior lead of half a second or more to gold.

Livio Hiltbrand finishes 82 hundredths behind the leader and can celebrate winning the bronze medal. The 19-year-old relegated the Austrian Vincent Wieser to fourth place by a hundredth of a second.

Eligible to start at this year’s Junior World Championships are athletes born between 2002 and 2006.

16 drivers are allowed to start per nation, whereby no more than ten per gender may be registered. Seven women and nine men represent Switzerland.
