renowned politician, Habib ThiaI left behind him enough to motivate posterity. Passed by several nominative and elective positions, he stands out as one of the most illustrious figures of the socialist regime for having been Prime Minister then President of the National Assembly.
Born on January 21, 1933 in Dakar, Habib Thiam did his first humanities in Dakar before flying off to study in Paris. He joined the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, then the university and finally the National School of Overseas France (ENFOM), specializing in Law and Political Science. His brilliant career and his performance in finance opened him the doors of the Ministry of Finance and the Banque de France where he worked before returning home.

A strong personality for the new republic
Following Senegal’s independence in 1960, Habib Thiam would be promoted to a number of top-level positions. He was thus appointed director of the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs then that of Justice before being placed at the head of the Secretariat of State for the Presidency of the Republic.
Influential member of Socialist Party, Habib Thiam was made a minister by President Léopold Sédar Senghor. His elective positions can be summed up in his function as deputy since he sat in the hemicycle from 1973. In 1977, the finance expert was elected president of the socialist parliamentary group in the National Assembly.

A Quality Prime Minister
After Abdou Diouf became president in 1981, Habib Thiam was appointed Prime Minister on 1 January. He held this position until April 3, 1983 before being replaced by Moustapha Niasse, until the measure of the abolition of the post took effect a month later.
From the post of Prime Minister, Thiam lands again in the National Assembly, of which he will be the president between 1983 and 1984, before giving way to Daouda Sow. On April 8, 1991, he became Prime Minister again and remained so until his succession by Mamadou Lamine Loum on July 3, 1998. After the fall of the socialist regime in 2000, Habib Thiam retired from political and media life. He died on June 26, 2017 in Dakar at the age of 84.
