Human remains found in California mountains match where Julian Sanders disappeared
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Human remains have been found by hikers in California’s San Antonio Hills, in an area that roughly matches where British film actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago, local authorities said.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the human remains were found in the wilderness this morning.
“Fontana police were notified when hikers (near the mountain) found the human remains,” the statement added.
The remains were sent to the coroner for identification, with results expected next week.
Julian Sands, who became famous for his performance in the 1985 movie “A Room with a View,” was on the 3,000-meter-high Mount San Antonio not far from downtown Los Angeles in January. Antonio, known locally as Mount Baldy.
Julian Sanders, a 65-year-old experienced hiker, once described his happiest moment as “climbing close to the summit on a cold and bright morning”.
California was hit by a string of storms in December and January that brought heavy snow to mountainous areas, including the San Antonio Mountains.
San Bernardino County police said at the time that the situation had become increasingly dangerous, with eight people killed there between 2017 and 2022.
“He has not been declared missing or presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he is dead,” Julian Sanders’ brother said two weeks after the search began.
