Julia Roberts: Her brother Eric’s blunder – ‘She owes her career to me’ – Apologizes

In his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far, the prolific actor apologizes to his sister for saying he made her famous. “Now one of the things I’d like to apologize for in this book is that I said publicly on more than one occasion, ‘If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts,'” Roberts writes. “This is not only unfortunate, but also untrue. And I hope Julie accepts this public apology. It was a stupid thing I said. I was proud of her, but she was proud, for my benefit.” (Roberts also talks in the book about family members referring to the Oscar-winning star as Julie.)

Roberts notes that Julia could have easily made it without his intervention. “She’s a very driven woman,” he says. “Someone would have pulled her out of the crowd in a place like New York without my help.”

However, later in the same chapter, Roberts reveals how his success as an actor may have inspired his sister’s pursuit of showbiz. “I was born to do this. “I moved to New York when I wasn’t old enough to drink a beer in public,” he writes. “If Julie had stayed in Atlanta, she probably would have married a rich man and lived a very different life. So I would take credit, once I had separated from my father (or thought I had) and moved to New York, that I said to my sisters, “Come on, girls, the water is fine.” Then, I think, he saw my life as a young actor in New York and saw what I did for a living, and he wanted to try it.”

Roberts goes on to explain that Julia and their other sister, Lisa, moved into his Manhattan apartment with him. “They didn’t know it would be so hard to be around me,” she writes. “That’s why Julie and Lisa wanted a place of their own soon. I was already deep in drugs. They stayed with me for the better part of a year and then I took their own place.”

Roberts once went public with his sister’s claim to fame in a 2018 Vanity Fair interview where he talked about both the Pretty Woman actress and his daughter, American Horror Story star Emma Roberts. “If it wasn’t for me, there wouldn’t be Julia Roberts and Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actors, and I’m very proud of that. When Julia first came to New York, I went to William Morris and said, “Which one of you will sign my sister Julia?” Eric Roberts said in the interview. “And I’m so proud that everybody knows I was first, because I was first by a long distance. I was the first to get Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, so I’m proud of that.”
