Former President of the National Council Judith Stamm died at the age of 88, the Lucerne section of the Center announced on Twitter on Wednesday evening. The former PDC national councilor from Lucerne has distinguished herself in the fight for equality between men and women.
After the introduction of women’s suffrage in the canton of Lucerne in 1970, Judith Stamm was one of the first women to be elected to the Grand Council of Lucerne. She represented the PDC there from 1971 to 1984. In 1983, she was elected to the National Council, which she left in 1999.
In 1989, this Lucernoise, born in Schaffhausen and who grew up in Zurich, was appointed president of the federal commission for women’s issues by the Federal Council. His accession to the presidency of the National Council in 1996 and 1997 represented the peak of his political career.
In 2002 she received a Medal of Honor from the City of Lucerne for her services to the city.
