Judicial Shutdown: Indonesian Judges Unite Against Corruption

CHAIRMAN of PP Muhammadiyah Busyro Muqoddas (Doc. MI)

CHAIRMAN of PP Muhammadiyah Busyro Muqoddas asked President-elect Prabowo Subianto to take a stand regarding the condition of judges in Indonesia who are on strike because they are demanding a salary increase. Busyro stated that now is the moment for Prabowo to pay attention to the condition of judges and the judicial system in Indonesia.

“So independence of the judiciary is the correct keyword, because we observe that it is impossible for our judiciary to be able to uphold its independent morality if the current political climate is not completely changed immediately. So the context in which Pak Prabowo was reported earlier is the right moment,” said Busyro in Jakarta , Tuesday (8/10).

Busyro said that Indonesian judges and the judiciary need to pay special attention to Prabowo when he serves as president. He stated that by paying attention and meeting the needs of judges, a judicial system that is independent and will not be easily tempted to commit corruption will be created.

“How can we and journalists help him as an elected president with strong experience as well as paying attention to the agenda of a truly independent judiciary. It is not only about welfare which is important, very important, but also about the improvement and further education of the judges. Professionalism “It’s impossible without further education. Well, Muhammadiyah’s position as an institution that is concerned with education is that it is ready to work together with the Government, the Supreme Court, the DPR, how can the agenda of these judges become a common agenda,” he said.

Previously, Indonesian Judges Solidarity (SHI) said that thousands of judges in courts throughout Indonesia would go on collective leave for five days from 7 to 11 October 2024. They demanded an increase in salaries and allowances which had not increased in the last 12 years.

SHI also demands the ratification of the Bill on the Position of Judges which seeks to create a strong and independent legal basis for the profession of Judge, which is regulated comprehensively through the Law on the Position of Judges. This is important to guarantee the position and authority of the judge’s profession in the eyes of the law.
