Judicial recovery: 47% of creditors are small businesses

Close to half of the creditor companies of large business groups that entered the judicial recovery process in Brazil are small businesses. The information is from a unprecedented survey by Sebrae (Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service) which mapped 14,924 creditor companies, of which 47.4% (or 7,077) are micro and small companies.

The study considered nine conglomerates that published the list of creditors in the period from January to May this year. Among the Federation Units with the largest number of micro and small creditor companies are São Paulo (2,247), Rio de Janeiro (1,129), Bahia (556) and Minas Gerais (532). Southeast and Northeast lead regionally in the number of creditors, with 61% and 16%, respectively. The South accounts for 11%, the Central-West for 8% and the North for 4%.

The study detected a 37% increase in requests for judicial recovery from medium and large companies and a 30.2% increase in approvals, between 2022 and 2023, considering January to May.

“These data reflect the aspect of a country that does not have credit. It is a sum of factors: scarcity of credit, high interest rates and high default rates. This is the ideal recipe for companies to enter into judicial recovery”, assesses Luciano Bravo, CEO of Commercial Intelligence and Country Manager at Savel Capital Partners.

Sectors with more creditors and alternatives

The most common field of activity varies regionally. In the Southeast region, for example, 32% of credits owed to micro and small companies are for wholesale trade specializing in food, beverages and tobacco products; and 29% for the retail trade of construction materials.

In the Northeast, the sector with the largest volume of credits receivable (65%) is the retail trade of fuels for motor vehicles.

Among the options that companies can resort to, there is international credit, as Bravo explains. “It is possible to access credit in ten countries and more than 4 thousand banks, even if the company has records at Serasa, Bacen or is in Judicial Recovery”.

The CEO also explains that the restrictions are smaller. “The company can make successive credit purchases, without the limit that Bacen imposes of 30% of its average monthly revenue in installments”, he adds.
