Prosecutors requested seven years in prison for former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang Seung-tae.
Former Supreme Court Justice Park Byung-dae was sentenced to five years in prison, and former Supreme Court Justice Ko Young-han was sentenced to four years in prison.
It has been 4 years and 7 months since the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was brought to trial as a defendant, and the number of trials has been 290.
The prosecution announced this today (15th) at the final hearing on charges of abuse of power and other charges once morest former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang and former Supreme Court Justices Park Byeong-dae and Koh Young-han.
The prosecution stated the reason for the sentence, saying, “The National Court Administration contacted judges to inform them of the advantages and disadvantages of the judiciary according to the trial conclusion and induced a specific ruling, thereby destroying the environment for judicial independence,” and “an incident that destroyed trust in our country’s judicial system.” .
Previously, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang was arrested and indicted in 2019 on charges of authorizing or directly ordering abuse of judicial administrative power, including interfering with front-line trials in collusion with former Deputy Director of the National Court Administration Lim Jong-heon.
Chief Justice Yang is accused of unfairly interfering in various trials, including compensation lawsuits for victims of Japanese forced labor, in order to receive support from the Blue House and others for the introduction of an appellate court, which was a key project of the Supreme Court.
In addition, there are suspicions that some judges were designated as so-called ‘water-related judges’, giving them personnel disadvantages, and that internal case information and trends were collected through dispatched judges to keep the Constitutional Court in check.
So far, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang has strongly denied the charges, saying, “The indictment was created as if the Creator created something from nothing.”
The court plans to sentence the former Supreme Court Chief Justice and Supreme Court Justices as early as the end of this year or as early as next year.
