Judgment expected in the trial of Kremlin critic Navalny

In another trial once morest the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexej Navalny, a court wants to announce the verdict (today) on Friday. The Kremlin critic is accused of founding and financing an “extremist” organization. He is also said to have called for extremist activities and “revived Nazi ideology”. If convicted, the 47-year-old opposition figure faces up to 20 more years behind bars in a special camp. The trial takes place in the high-security prison of the IK-6 penal camp, located regarding 250 kilometers south-east of Moscow. Navalny is already serving a nine-year sentence there for alleged fraud. In his final statement before the court, the opposition politician had criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which had killed “tens of thousands,” as the “stupidest and most senseless war of the 21st century.”
