In another trial against the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexej Navalny, a court wants to announce the verdict (today) on Friday. The Kremlin critic is accused of founding and financing an “extremist” organization. He is also said to have called for extremist activities and “revived Nazi ideology”. Navalny let it be known in advance that he was expecting a “Stalinist” punishment intended to “intimidate”.

If convicted, the 47-year-old opposition figure faces up to 20 more years behind bars in a special camp. The trial takes place in the high-security prison of the IK-6 penal camp, located about 250 kilometers south-east of Moscow. Navalny is already serving a nine-year sentence there for alleged fraud. In his final statement before the court, the opposition politician had criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which had killed “tens of thousands,” as the “stupidest and most senseless war of the 21st century.”
