Judge concludes McAfee committed suicide, but family resumes appeal

A judge from Martorell (Barcelona) has concluded that John McAfeecreator of the famous computer antivirus, he committed suicide in his cell Can Brians prison in Barcelona, although the family has appealed to the Audiencia in Barcelona.

McAfee, who was 75 years old, was found dead in June 2021 in his cell at Brians 2 prison in Sant Esteve Sesrovires (Barcelona), the same day as the National Court communicated its decision to extradite him the United States for alleged tax evasion.

A court in Martorell opened an investigation to determine the causes of death, before which the family of the programmer, who doubted that he had taken his life, requested that a second autopsy on the body, which days later confirmed the suicide hypothesis.

As reported to Efe judicial sources, the judge has concluded that McAfee committed suicide and has agreed case file, although the family has appealed this decision to the Audiencia de Barcelona. The judge has also decided that McAfee’s body, which remains in the morgue in Barcelona, not handed over to family members until the appeal is resolved that the family brought in, according to the sources.

The remains of McAfee were transferred following his death to the mortuary of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, in the City of Justice of Barcelona, and remain since then in one of the fridges of the enclosure.

McAfee had been arrested in October 2020 at El Prat airport in Barcelona as he was regarding to catch a flight to Istanbul and has since been in pre-trial detention. During the extradition hearing, the businessman, whose U.S. tax debt amounts to more than four million dollars, claimed to have paid “millions of dollars in taxes” and said to be victim of political persecution for having denounced corruption in the tax agency.
