– This means that it is a value that Norwegian teams perform in Europe, says NTF’s managing director Jens Haugland to NTB.
He is reacting to the news that the European Football Association (Uefa) has decided that the money pot for teams that do not play in the European Cup will be increased from 4 percent to 7 percent in the period 2024 to 2027.
– The increase from Uefa is significant for our clubs. Of course, that means a lot, says Haugland.
The previous payment was just over NOK 40 million. The rising euro exchange rate is not bad news for the Norwegian clubs either.
– With a little flow, we are close to NOK 100 million, says Haugland.
70 percent of the money is distributed based on the nations’ position in Uefa’s five-year ranking (where Norway was number 14 after last season), the rest is distributed based on how much the club that plays the most in the individual nation gets for its European Cup participation. In recent seasons, Bodø/Glimt and Molde have profited well from European Cup games.
If it continues to rain in Bodø/Glimt and Molde, it will therefore fall to an even greater extent on the elite series clubs that do not participate in any of the European Cup tournaments.
– With the achievements of Molde and Glimt, the increase will be significant, says Haugland.
The distribution key has been prepared in consultation with club association ECA and the interest organization European Leagues.
The idea behind the scheme is that the support should contribute to competitive balance in the leagues, so that clubs that earn a lot from European Cup participation do not become completely dominant.
