Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, the oldest man in the world, dies

MEXICO CITY.- Juan Vicente Pérez Moracertified in 2022 by the Guinness record As the oldest man in the worlddied on April 2 at the age of 114, confirmed the authorities of Venezuela, the country in which he was born and lived.

“Juan Vicente Pérez Mora has transcended into eternity at the age of 114, a native of the town of El Cobre who gave Venezuela the Guinness record for being the oldest man in the world,” President Nicolás Maduro indicated in X.

In that sense, he added: “I send my hug and condolences to his family and to all the people of El Cobre, Táchira state. May God receive him in his holy glory.”

Pérez Mora was officially confirmed as the oldest man alive on February 4, 2022, when he was 112 years and 253 days old, according to a review on the Guinness World Records site.

Known as “Tío Vicente”, he was born in El Cobre, state Tachira (west), May 27, 1909, and was the ninth child of ten children. He married Ediofina García, with whom he had 11 children. The woman died in 1997. As of 2022 he had 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

“At the age of five he began to work with his father and brothers in agriculture and helped in the sugar cane and coffee harvest,” indicated the Guinness World Record organization following granting him the distinction.

In an interview some time ago, the man revealed what was his secret to celebrate more than 100 years and it was forceful: “Work a lotrest on vacation, go to bed early, drink a glass of brandy every dayamar a God and always carry it in your heart.”

The great celebrations of his birthday took place inside his residence in a rural area, where he lived his last years with family and under the care of doctors, reported the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo.

When the news of his death became known, many echoed and said goodbye to him on social networks. The governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, published a message along with a photo to say goodbye.

“Our dear Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, today with deep sadness and pain we say goodbye to you, to that archetype of a man from Tachira, humble, hard-working, peaceful, enthusiastic regarding family and tradition,” he wrote.

During the last years of his life, Pérez Mora received numerous recognitions and tributes, including the Guinness record, local ceremonies and distinctions from the Government.
