OAKLAND — Juan Soto hit two home runs, including the first grand slam of his career, and the San Diego Padres won four straight for the first time this season to beat the Oakland Athletics 10-1 on Sunday.
The Padres were the only team in the majors that had not won more than three straight victories. His success led to another losing record for the A’s, who reached 103 losses in the season, the most for the franchise since 1979.
Soto shot for two runs in the seventh and in the next inning he hit a grand slam to expand the score, bringing him to 32 home runs for the year, two shy of his career high that he set in 2019 with the Nationals.
Both pitchers had three scoreless innings before being replaced — Joe Boyle for the A’s and NIck Martinez for the Padres. Ávila (2-2) earned the win for the Padres in his first relief appearance in almost a month.
For the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 1-for-5 with one run scored, Juan Soto 3-for-5 with two runs scored and six RBIs, Eguy Rosario 1-for-4 with one RBI. Venezuelan José Azocar 2-0 with one scored.
