In a video broadcast on social networks, Juan Sebastián Montoya, a pre-candidate for Mayor of Bello, is seen getting handcuffed into a vehicle on the followingnoon of this Thursday, May 11. Montoya was captured at the exit of the bunker of the Prosecutor’s Office where he attended a summons.
After his capture, Montoya was transferred to La Minorista’s Paso Transitional Center.
Montoya, who had begun the process of collecting signatures in his municipality a month ago, will be prosecuted as allegedly responsible for the crimes of conspiracy to commit aggravated crime, falsehood in a public document and malfeasance.
His case would supposedly be related to an annex process that this week led to the capture of a former judge from the same municipality, his assistant and his office secretary.
However, so far, neither the Prosecutor’s Office nor its campaign team have made a public statement on the matter.
The 35-year-old politician from Bellanita served as police inspector for his municipality for five years until the end of last year, when President Gustavo Petro —for whom he campaigned— commissioned him from the sub-directorate of the Financial Information and Analysis Unit (UIAF)an administrative unit of the State attached to the Ministry of Finance.
But despite this closeness to the National Government, the endorsement of the Historical Pact for the next elections in the municipality was not for Montoya, but for the former candidate for the Chamber, Antonio Jose Moya.
Montoya, a strong opponent of the last administrations of his municipality, especially the Suárez Mira political clan, had spent a month looking for the 60,000 signatures that he needed to endorse his candidacy by the Firm for Bello movement.
His capture for alleged corruption is striking, since Montoya has gained recognition in his city precisely for denouncing this type of crime. Even just a month ago, when he had already left the Police inspection, he denounced an alleged case of embezzlement of public resources in the Bello Security Secretary.
This lawyer had already aspired to the mayoralty of his municipality in 2011, when he was barely 23 years old, following in historic regional elections in the municipality the blank vote will win.
Years later, in 2015, Montoya also unsuccessfully tried to be elected as a councilor.
In an interview this week, Montoya assured that his main objective in the Mayor’s Office was “Change the conception that Bello is an illegal and corrupt city” and that one of his main proposals was the creation of the first public university in the municipality.
