Anzoategui native Juan Pablo Salgado, 19 years old, used his creativity to become the champion of the dunk contest held prior to the 2024 Professional Basketball Super League (SPB) All-Star Game, recently held in the state of Carabobo.
The Barcelona native, who belongs to Frontinos del Táchira, accumulated 79 points in two rounds to win the slam dunk competition, which took place in front of a large crowd at the Valencia Forum.
“Everything I achieved was thanks to God,” said the basketball player – who lives in the Tronconal sector and is 1.80 meters tall – to the SPB press department, after being crowned king of dunks. “During this event I was not nervous at all. I asked God to take those nerves away from me and everything went well.”
Young Scores
In the first phase of the dunk competition, Salgado achieved a score of 39, while in the second the judges gave him a score of 40, which guaranteed his victory.
In this showy event, one of the most popular of the SPB’s luminaries’ meeting, he beat Kelvin Caraballo (Héroes de Falcón), Tim Bond Jr. (Pioneros del Ávila) and Fausto Pichardo (Pioneros), to take home the trophy for best “ball burier.”
“I used my creativity to win, because that’s what makes one stand out in this type of competition. I feel very happy about my triumph,” added the boy who was one of the three winners of the skills competitions, held before a stellar duel in which the Criollos beat the Importados 97-94.
The other athletes who won trophies at the sports gala were James Reese V (Brillantes del Zulia) and Yeferson Guerra (Panteras de Miranda), who won in the three-point and one-on-one competitions, respectively.
