SAO PAULO (AP) — Uruguay national team player Juan Izquierdo remains hospitalized at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia during Thursday’s Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo. .

According to a message posted by Montevideo Club on the X social network, Izquierdo is currently under observation in the intensive care unit but is in stable condition.

“Juan Isquierdo suffered a cardiac arrhythmia during the game against San Pablo. He was treated at the CTI at the Albert Einstein Hospital. His condition is stable and remains under observation.

The player collapsed in the 83rd minute of the 2-0 victory over Sao Paulo in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores against Uruguay’s Tricolore at the Estadio Morumbi. An ambulance entered the venue and took him to the Einstein Hospital near the Sao Paulo Stadium.

National team president Alejandro Balbi assured Uruguayan media that the athlete had passed all fitness tests carried out by the club every year. “Juan never had any cardiac events. This episode was a surprise to everyone,” Balbi told the outlet.

The footballer underwent a CT scan on Friday morning to assess his health.

Center back Juan Isquierdo Viana is 27 years old. Born on July 4, 1997 in Montevideo. He wore the shirt in 2022 and returned in 2024 after a spell with Liverpool.
