Journalists take to the streets for press freedom

News from Angola – More than two hundred Angolan journalists took to the streets of Luanda today to protest once morest the assaults on the headquarters of the SJA and acts of intimidation once morest professionals in the field.

Under the motto “Who is afraid of Freedom? The journalists initially concentrated in Largo do Soeto, opposite the Instituto Médio Industrial de Luanda (IMIL), having marched along avenues Ho Chi Minh, Gomes Spencer, Deolinda Rodrigues, Rua Soba Mandume and culminating in Lardo da Macambira, Rua da freedom.

When taking the floor, the general secretary of the Union of Angolan Journalists, assured that the attacks on the union’s headquarters are an attack on freedom of the press and, as such, it is a serious threat to freedom of the press.

“Freedom of the press is a presupposition for the existence of journalism and the journalist”, stated the unionist.

Teixeira Cândido expressed solidarity with the support of the President of the Republic for his position regarding the constant assaults that the headquarters of the SJA has suffered.

Founded in 1992, this is the first time that the Union of Journalists takes to the streets to claim more freedom of the press in the history of Angolan journalism.
