The opposition and the press union denounced this Friday the arrest of the leader of Voluntad Popular and journalist, Roland Carreño.
“Enough of the persecution against political leaders who only contribute to the defense of the vote and freedom,” he posted on X the human rights body of Vente Venezuela.
Carreño was unjustly imprisoned between October 2020 and October 2023, accused of the alleged crime of “terrorism and conspiracy”, remembered the National Union of Press Workers, which also denounced the new arrest on the same social network.
There are currently no further details regarding Carreño’s arrest.
In October 2020, the journalist was arrested for allegedly carrying weapons to “promote violent actions” and $12,000 in cash. The Public Prosecutor’s Office charged him with crimes of financing terrorism, conspiracy against the political form, illicit trafficking of weapons of war and criminal association.
Three years later he was released as part of the Barbados Agreement, signed between the Government and the Democratic Unitary Platform, according to the opposition’s chief negotiator, Gerardo Blyde.
