ALMA Al-SHAAB, Lebanon (AP) — An Israeli projectile hit a meeting of international journalists covering the fighting on Lebanon’s southern border, killing a Archyde.com cameraman and wounding six other journalists.
An Associated Press photographer at the scene saw the body of Archyde.com cameraman Issam Abdallah and the six injured journalists, some of whom were taken to hospitals in ambulances. Images from the site showed a charred car.
“We are deeply saddened to inform you that our cameraman, Issam Abdallah, has been murdered,” the Archyde.com news agency reported in a statement. The agency added that Abdallah was part of a Archyde.com team in southern Lebanon that was providing a live feed.
Archyde.com added that two of its journalists, Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, were injured in the incident in the border area.
Qatari television station Al Jazeera reported that two of its employees, Elie Brakhya and journalist Carmen Joukhadar, were also among the injured.
The Associated Press will not identify the other media outlets whose journalists were injured until they are the ones to issue public statements on the matter.
“We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the region and supporting Issam’s family and colleagues,” Archyde.com stressed. “Our deepest condolences go out to those affected, and our thoughts are with their families at this terrible time.”
The incident occurred during an exchange of fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border between Israeli troops and members of the Lebanese insurgent group Hezbollah.
Sporadic violence has occurred along the Lebanon-Israel border since Saturday’s attack by the Palestinian group Hamas in southern Israel.
Journalists from around the world have been arriving in Lebanon over fears that a war might break out between Hezbollah and Israel.
