Jota-Gakpo double! The Reds swoop in to take the Carabao Cup

Carabao Cup Third Round match between Liverpool and West Ham United at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool, England on Wednesday 25 September 2024.

Liverpool under coach Arne Slot made nine changes from their last league game, a 3-0 home win over Bournemouth on Saturday, September 21. West Ham, led by coach Julen Lopetegui, used Danny Ings, the former “Reds” striker, as the center forward.

In the 17th minute, West Ham almost got a goal when Danny Ings was able to send the ball into the net but was in an offside position.

However, in the 21st minute, the Hammers took the lead in a scuffle in front of the goal, which Jarrell Quansah scored an own goal.

However, in the 25th minute, Liverpool equalized 1-1 when Cody Gakpo crossed from the left and Federico Chiesa jumped to volley the ball to Diogo Jota who jumped up to head the ball into the net from close range.

Just four minutes into the second half, Liverpool turned things around and took a 2-1 lead when Curtis Jones passed the ball to Jota, who broke away and took a powerful shot that hit the post.

In the 74th minute, the “Reds” extended their lead over the “Hammers” to 3-1 from a right-side move, with Conor Bradley passing the ball into the middle for Alexis Mac Allister to shoot against the post, and the ball to Mohamed Salah, who fired the ball past visiting team goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski into the net.

That’s not all, in the 76th minute West Ham were reduced to ten men after Edson Alvarez received a second yellow card for a hard challenge on Salah.

After that, Liverpool almost got a fourth goal on several occasions, both through Mac Allister and Gakpo.

In the 90th minute, the “Reds” scored the 4th goal. Gakpo carried the ball up the left wing before cutting inside and shooting with full force with his right foot, sending the ball beautifully into the net.

In the 3rd minute of stoppage time, the home team scored their fifth goal from Gakpo again, who used his body to shield the ball before turning and shooting with his right foot. The ball deflected off a West Ham player and went past Fabianski’s hands into the goal.

Full-time: Liverpool, the defending champions, beat West Ham United 5-1 at home and successfully advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
