Mirna Walid – Beirut – Josiane Boulos’s dreams are many and great in the Lebanese theatre, led by a national theater as well as in the countries of the world, and an archive of the Lebanese theater that includes all the works of the theater stars, including Raymond Jbara, Jalal Khoury, Shoshu, Antoine, Latifa Multaqa, and Osama Al-Aref, and an international festival for the Lebanese theater in Beirut.
Josiane Boulos took over the management of Mono Theater in 2022, fulfilling a long-held dream. She works 14 hours a day, and seeks to achieve new projects, including a children’s theater, and hopes that the theater will open its doors from eleven in the morning until eleven at night.
Today, we present to you the first part of our interview with Josiane Boulos, during which he talked regarding managing the Mono Theater and her big dreams.

What do you hope to achieve at Mono Theater, following your success in managing it?

I hope to expand the venue, and there is a great demand for theatrical productions at the Mono Theater, and I cannot accommodate everyone. I dream of more theaters, with active management, that directs and encourages the actor. I am seeking to allocate a space for children in the Mono Theater, a project that is currently being implemented, because children must attend the theater since their childhood. When a child laughs, feels, and interacts, he learns more quickly. I don’t like studying, but I like learning, and there is a big difference between them. I was not a diligent student at school, and during school breaks I would act and invent. I hope that the theater will be active during the day, to accommodate people who do not work, or who have free time, and this is a matter under study, and I hope that we will reach a stage where the theater will operate from eleven in the morning until eleven at night, as an opportunity to increase production, Especially for young graduates.

What plays are you currently attending?

There is an upcoming collaboration with director Wagdy Moawad, which is a re-production of the first play he wrote when he was young. The work team is Lebanese, and since some professions are not available in Lebanon, Wagdy Moawad will take it upon himself to train some Lebanese youth in these professions. As for the decoration, it is very huge, and requires a full month to prepare it. The theater will be closed during this period, for rehearsals and rehearsals, which require three weeks. The theater will open its doors, in the last three days, for anyone who wishes to watch the rehearsals.
On February 28, the Mono Theater will begin showing the play “Under the Sponsorship of Zakur,” directed by Gabriel Yammine. It will be presented as part of honoring director Raymond Jabbara through four plays written and directed by him. We called them “Four for Raymond,” which is Gabriel Yammine’s idea. He will present a play directed by him, Gabriel Yammine, Julia Kassar, Rifaat Tarabay, and Antoine Ashkar, and the participating actors include veterans and newcomers.

It can be said that Ingozian Pauls revolutionized the world of theater?

Theater must maintain the level it has reached, and this is a great challenge, and we must diversify, and for this reason I try to bring in plays from abroad, to avoid duplicating works by the same people, especially since Beirut only has three theaters. Theater is a message, it should not stop working, and there is a moral and financial return, and I receive letters of thanks from people, and I did not expect that I would succeed to this degree, in light of the spread of the Corona virus and the economic crisis. Theater is my passion, and despite the fatigue and difficulties, I love my work, and I am happy with what I do, especially following I put Western touches in the theater. I must acknowledge the work team, which consists of nine people. We work day and night. The theater has become a restless beehive, the rooms are bustling with rehearsals and preparations, and the theater is fully booked for 2024.

Why did comedies stop on TV?

I don’t know, knowing that comedy is the salt of life, and I wonder why, and I notice that tragedies are similar. Why don’t we watch a work regarding the story of Abu Salim? Or the story of Shushu’s life? Why don’t we see work regarding the Tanios Rock? Why don’t we choose what we’re like and our stories? Why don’t we write regarding war? The sitcom and hidden camera programs are gone. I do not think that the reason is the cost of production, because comedy has a greater financial return than tragedy, and people go to the theater because they need entertainment.

Is Josiane Boulos still challenging herself?

Of course, I still challenge myself, and all my works are evidence of that. “Four for Raymond,” collaborating with Wajdi Moawad, and singing on stage, these works and others are a challenge to myself.

What does the Lebanese theater need?

During a meeting with the former French ambassador, she asked me regarding the biggest problem in Lebanese theatre. I told her: “It is created in Beirut and dies in Beirut.” Our theater is world-class, and its directors and actors have all the capabilities and capabilities, but we do not have the capabilities. “We work with live flesh, there is no support.” The theater must travel inside and outside Lebanon, and the expatriate Lebanese must watch our works. There are professions abroad that do not exist in Lebanon. Unfortunately, there are organizers who work in theaters or in municipalities, who attend theatrical productions at the Avignon Festival, buy theatrical works, and distributors sell them, and these two professions do not exist in Lebanon.
