North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein raised nearly $6 million since July in his bid to replace North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, D, who is term limited.
Cooper has already endorsed Stein, who previously replaced Cooper as attorney general in 2016.
Stein’s campaign announced Thursday that the Democrat raised more than $5.7 million in the second half of 2023. In the first six months, he raised $6 million.
The new haul comes from more than 15,000 North Carolina donors.
The campaign went into the new year with $11.5 million cash on hand. Stein’s operation brought in more than any other gubernatorial campaign in an off year, according to his team.
People from “across North Carolina are helping to build Josh’s campaign because they believe in his vision for a safer, stronger North Carolina,” Jeff Allen, campaign manager for Stein, said in a statement.
“Headed into 2024, their support puts us in a uniquely strong position to make clear to voters in every corner of the state the stark choice they have in this election: someone who fights for them or someone who fights the culture wars,” he added.
Stein is in a heated race in the battleground state of North Carolina. He’s the only Democratis candidate running. The leading Republican is currently North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson.
Most polling has Stein and Robinson in a tight race.
