2024 was a banner year for music, leaving music lovers spoiled for choice. ⁤To get a glimpse into some of the year’s highlights,we tapped Pallbearer bassist Joseph Rowand for his top albums.

Frail Body — *Artificial Bouquet*

This album from the tireless road warriors Frail‍ Body instantly‌ transported Rowand back to⁢ the “screamo” sound of the early 2000s, reminiscent of labels like Level Plane and Robotic empire Records. “the modern production touches and the band’s distillation of savage anguish really provides a gratifying listen for my current self as well,” he says.

Thou – *Umbilical*

Thou’s *Umbilical*⁣ marks a⁢ return to their punk roots for the‌ band, which has explored various stylistic avenues. Rowand notes that while the album ⁢retains their core sound, ‌it’s infused with a frenetic energy driven by⁣ Tyler Coburn’s powerful ⁣drumming.

Zombi — *Direct Inject*

Synth masters Zombi return with another compelling release. *Direct Inject* ⁣features some of their heaviest, groove-centric tracks to date, along with a few atmospheric, downtempo ⁣numbers.

Inter⁢ Arma — *New Heaven*

Avant-garde RVA collective Inter Arma delivers their most ambitious⁢ album yet with *New Heaven* , a interesting blend of sonic exploration and ⁢raw power. Rowand calls out T.J. Childers’ drumming as notably gripping, while praising Mike Paparo’s expanded vocal⁤ range, which pushes boundaries ⁢and evokes ⁢the haunting baritone of Scott Walker and Leonard ⁣Cohen.

Spectral Voice — *Sparagmos*

Spectral Voice’s *Sparagmos* is an unnerving and immersive listening ⁣experience. The production intentionally ‍sounds degraded, lending a sense ‍of ancient finding. “The unsettling Disembowelment-esque clean melodies and occasional diversions into cult-like spates of world music provide me with an enjoyable twinge of⁤ dread,”⁣ Rowand says.
