Joseph Bovet Trail: Explore the Legacy of the Singing Abbé in Sâles

2023-06-17 14:57:16

Sâles inaugurated a trail dedicated to Joseph Bovet on Saturday. Born on October 7, 1869 in the town of Friborg, where he spent his childhood, the illustrious singing abbé is particularly known for the song Le Vieux Chalet, written in 1911.

The project consists of a 2.6 km path through the Gruyère village. Six stations, each decorated with a bench and a themed panel, line the route. Each panel has two QR codes: one for the public and one especially for children.

To anchor the abbot in the decor of the village of Sâles, a wooden statue of Bovet has also been installed on a bench in front of the church, opposite the house where he was born. The work, signed by the artist Raphaël Pache, was also inaugurated on Saturday.

Iconic choral art

Until now, there were hardly any traces of Joseph Bovet in Sâles, apart from a road in his name and a commemorative plaque attached to the entrance to the school. The birthplace of the famous abbot, who died on February 10, 1951 in Clarens (VD), still houses the local bakery.

The initiative for the project, costing 40,000 francs, came from the municipality’s Seniors Commission. From the fall of 2021, she decided to promote Abbé Bovet via the village of his childhood, the man of the Church, his music and his influence on Friborg choral art.

In addition to its “tube” the Old Chalet, this choral art occupies a place of choice on the path, recalled the tri-weekly La Gruyère in February. Father Bovet played a role at all musical levels and greatly contributed to making Friborg a canton of singers.
