At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, held from July 26 to August 11, long-distance runner Joselyn Brea competed in the women’s 1,500 and 5,000-meter (m) events, allowing her to compete against the best in the world.
In the 1,500 m she did not make it past the repechage round, while in the 5,000 m she made history by becoming the first Venezuelan to compete in a Grand Final. She was unable to win medals or diplomas because she finished fourteenth. Despite not winning any awards, the Carabobo native feels that meeting such world-renowned athletics figures was a luxury.
“Participating in the 5,000m final was very difficult because there were girls who are world champions, have records and everything necessary to stand out. I think that being with them on an important stage was a reward for me. Without a doubt, competing with the best long distance runners on the planet was a luxury,” she said in a conversation with Aloys Marín, a member of the press department of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV).
Gratitude
Brea, who showed her talent on the track of the Stade de France located in Saint-Denis, France, thanked the support given to her by Venezuelan fans because they recognized the effort she made for several months to participate in Paris 2024.
“I’ve received a lot of letters. People were paying attention to my results and my performance, and I’m very grateful for that. It’s time to look to the future,” said the 29-year-old, who hopes to prepare herself as much as possible to compete in Los Angeles 2028.
