Venezuelan Joselyn Brea did not have the support of the Goddess of Fortune in the Grand Final of the women’s 5,000 meters (m), because she finished 14th, 11 below third, which is the last position that gave access to a medal.

The athletics event, which brought together the 16 best long-distance runners in the world, was held on Monday at the Stade de France, the main venue for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which began their second and final week.

Brea, the first athlete from Spain to have the privilege of competing in the decisive stage of the endurance test in major world competitions, stopped the clock at 15 minutes, 17 seconds and four hundredths (15:17.04). The time did not allow her to obtain an Olympic diploma, reserved for the occupants of the first eight places.

Gold medalist

The gold medal in the 5,000m race went to Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, who stopped the clock in 14:28.56. She was followed by Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan, who finished the race in 14:30.61.

The bronze medal went to Italian Nadia Battocletti, a runner who crossed the finish line in 14.31.64.

Battocletti was followed by Kenyan Margaret Kipkemboi (14:32.23), Ethiopian Ejgayehu Taye (14:32.98), her compatriot Medina Eisa (14:35.43), Norwegian Karoline Grovdal (14:43:21) and Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay (14:45:21), who took places four, five, six, seven and eight in succession. All of them were awarded certifications by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
