Joselyn Brea finished fifteenth in heat one and will compete in the 1,500m repechage

One day after finishing fourteenth in the Grand Final of the 5,000 metres (m) flat, Venezuelan Joselyn Brea returned to the Stade de France, located in Saint-Denis, where she participated in the first qualifying heat of the 1,500 m flat and could not get her direct pass to the decisive stage of this demanding women’s athletics event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old from Carabobo completed the course on the French track in a time of four minutes, 13 seconds and 77 hundredths (4:13.77). With this time, she occupied the last position in heat one, in which 15 runners participated.

Despite the result, the Creole was not eliminated from the event. With her performance she earned a ticket to the repechage, which will be held this Wednesday and in which she will try to secure a place in the medal round.

Leader of the preliminary series

The top six finishers from heat one advanced to the final round, including Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, who finished first after stopping the clock at 3:58.84.

Tsegay was followed by Britain’s Laura Muir who crossed the finish line in 3:58.91. She was followed by Kenyan Susan Ejore who completed the course in 3:59.01.

Australia’s Georgia Griffith (3:59.22), France’s Agathe Guillemot (3:59:22) and America’s Emily Mackay (3:59.63) finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, securing their places in the final on Thursday at the arena that hosted the showpiece match of the 1998 World Cup in France, when the Bleu team beat Brazil 3-0 to claim the crown.

Other outstanding sportswomen

In group 2 the winner was Ethiopian Diribe Welteji (3:59.73), followed by Britain’s Georgia Bell (4:00.29), America’s Nikki Hiltz (4:00.42), Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon (4:00.74), Poland’s Weronika Lizakowska (4:01.54) and New Zealand’s Maia Ramsden (4:02.83).

In the third preliminary competition, the winner was Kenyan Nelly Chepchirchir (4:02.67), followed by Australian Jessica Hull (4:02.70), American Elle St. Pierre (4:03.22), Polish Klaudia Kazimierska (4:03.49), Portuguese Salomé Afonso (4:04.42) and Spanish Marta Pérez (4:04.94).

All of these athletes have made it to the decisive stage, which Brea will attend as long as she excels in a repechage that promises to be quite close due to the quality of the long-distance runners present on Parisian soil.
