Venezuelan long distance runner Joselyn Brea showed her quality in finishing and thanks to that she was able to place eighth on Friday in the second qualifying heat of the 5,000 meters (m) flat for the women, something that gave her a direct pass to the Grand Final of the demanding athletics event.

Brea, 29, sealed her passage to the decisive phase at the Stade de France, located in Saint-Denis, where she stopped the clock at 15 minutes, two seconds and 89 hundredths (15:02.89).

For much of the series, in which 20 athletes participated, the Carabobo native was placed between positions 12 and 13, but in the last 400 m she was able to increase her speed, to get the eighth position that will allow her to be present in the decisive instance that will take place next Monday.

Winner of the series

The long-distance race was won by Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, who crossed the finish line in a time of 15:00.73. The winner was followed by Ethiopian representative Medina Eisa, who achieved a time of 15:00.82.

In third place was Australian Rose Davies, who had a time of 15:00.86, followed by Norwegian Karoline Grovdal (15.01.14).

Burundian Francine Niyomukunzi (15:01.42) and American Whittni Morgan (15:02.14) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. The North American achieved her best time of the 2024 season. Another athlete who sealed her passport to the summit stage was Finland’s Nathalie Blomqvist, who finished seventh after stopping the clocks at 15:02.75.

More opponents of the Creole

Brea, who has been preparing for the major world event in Spain and also practices duathlon, will have eight more opponents in the final next week, all from heat one, in which 20 specialists in long distance events also participated.

The qualifiers of the first preliminary event were Faith Kipyegon (Kenya), Sifan Hassan (Netherlands), Nadia Battocletti (Italy), Margaret Kimkemboi (Kenya), Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia), Eigayehu Taye (Ethiopia), Elise Cranny (USA) and Karissa Schweizer (United States).

The gold medal competition, scheduled for August 5, will begin at 9:10 p.m. French time (3:10 p.m. Venezuelan time).
