José Sifuentes Osornio, new director of the National Institute of Nutrition

The doctor Joseph Sifuentes Osornio was appointed as the new general director of the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition (INCMNSZ), for the period 2022-2027.

The Governing Board of this institute, chaired by the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer Varela, appointed Sifuentes Osornio as general director as a result of the internal consultation process carried out by the Auscultation Committee.

Until before this new responsibility, Sifuentes Osornio worked as director of Medicine of INCMNSZ since 2012.

José Sifuentes Osornio studied the career of Surgeon at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP). She studied the specialty in Internal Medicine at the INCMNSZ, where she graduated with the thesis Miliary Tuberculosis: Analysis of 78 cases treated at the National Institute of Nutrition Salvador Zubirán. In this institution he studied the subspecialty of Infectious Diseases and did postdoctoral studies in Clinical Microbiology, at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, United States.

At the INCMNSZ he has been head of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, head of the Clinical Service, coordinator of the Undergraduate Internship, researcher in Medical Sciences level B, level C, level D, level E and level F.

In addition, he has been a member of the committees for Antibiotics, Infection Control, Biosafety, Liver Transplantation, Transfusion Medicine, Emergency and Disaster Operations or Risk Management.

He was president of the committees of Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Transfusion Medicine; as well as a member of the Clinical File, Electronic Clinical File and Patient Safety committees. Likewise, he coordinated the Preparation Committee for the Attention of the Epidemic by SARS-CoV-2 in 2020.

The new head of the INCMNSZ has served as a professor of the specialty of Infectious Diseases at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and of the course of excellence recognized by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

He served as president of the College of Internal Medicine of Mexico, president of the Mexican Association of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, head of the Infectious Diseases Section at the National Academy of Medicine, member of the Governing Board of the “Federico Gómez” Children’s Hospital of Mexico, and president of the Department of Medicine of the National Academy of Medicine.
