Montevideo.- The former president of Uruguay José Mujica (2010-2015) announced this Monday in a press conference that he has a tumor in the esophagus.
Mujica, 88, said in a press conference that the disease was detected during a medical checkup last Friday.
“It was discovered that I have a tumor in the esophagus, which is obviously very compromised,” he reported.
According to the former president, his situation poses difficulties in undergoing chemotherapy or surgery. His health condition is also complicated by an immunological disease that he has suffered for more than 20 years and that affects his kidneys.
Mujica, president of Uruguay between 2010 and 2015, however, assured that “as long as the roll holds out” he will continue to be active in the ranks of the leftist Popular Participation Movement (MPP) and Frente Amplio.
“In my life, more than once the grim reaper was hanging around the cot, but she continued to shepherd me. This time it seems to me that he comes with the scythe at the ready, and we will see what happens,” she said with one of her usual metaphors. “As long as I can, I will continue to be active and entertained with vegetables.
