Venezuelan José Maita concluded his performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday, after failing to make it through the men’s 800-meter (m) repechage, which took place in Saint-Denis as part of the athletics tournament.

Maita took to the track at the Stade de France and took part in the third heat of the special round. She finished in third position, stopping the clock at one minute, 46 seconds and 44 hundredths (1:46.44).

The first place in the series was occupied by the Italian Simone Barontini, who clocked 1:45.56. In second place came Benjamin Robert, who stopped the clock at 1:45.83.

Play-off rule

According to the rules of World Athletics (formerly the International Federation of Athletics), which are endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for major universal events, only the winners of the four qualifying rounds, plus the two best times among the losers, advanced to the semi-finals. For this reason, the Italian Barontini was able to advance to the next stage in the group that included Maita as a participant.

In the overall repechage, in which 35 athletes participated – of which only two were disqualified – the native was placed in 21st place.

The Venezuelan finished third in his qualifying round and was twenty-first in the overall play-off table.

In the first heat, the winner was Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura (1:45.52), while Mexican Jesús López (1:45.13) emerged as the winner of the second.

Another winner

The athlete who won the fourth round was the American Brandon Miller (1:44 21) who also sealed his passage to the next phase of this men’s competition.

The American was followed by the Algerian Mohamed Gouaned (1:44.37), followed by the Norwegian Tobias Grondstad (1:44.57). Both sealed tickets to the next stage, by achieving the two most outstanding times among those who did not come out on top.
