The experienced baseball player José “cafecito” Martínez was the hero in the triumph of the Tigres de Aragua 6-5 over Caribes de Anzoátegui, in Thursday’s matchday of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).

Martínez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to leave La Tribu on the field, which lost for the second consecutive night at the José Pérez Colmenares stadium in Maracay.

With the setback on Maracayero soil, the aboriginal troop has accumulated four defeats so far this week and ended its road tour with a balance of one conquest and five setbacks.

Costly mistakes

Caribes started by winning the match with a score in the first inning. However, the Bengali ninth responded immediately with three scores, two of them dirty after a fielding error by first baseman Leonardo Reginatto in a play that should have ended that first chapter.

In the second act the aborigines scored a run and in the third the locals once again stretched the difference to two. Those led by Morgan Ensberg made one more in the fourth inning to put the shares at 4-3, in the fifth Andruw Monasterio equalized the score with a home run and Romer Cuadrado drove in one more to put the game 5-4 in favor of the orientals.

Relievers Liarvis Breto, Richard Guasch and Manuel Cachutt paraded for Caribes, who kept the feline offensive at bay until the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Loiger Padrón got on top of his game, and he could only get one out before “cafecito” Martínez made a run for it with Alexi Amarista in circulation.

Bad streak

The Tribe began the 2024/2025 harvest with a bad streak. They have lost four games in a row and of the first six games they could only win one.

In part that is because the pitching staff has given up a total of 34 runs, ranking second to last in the league in collective ERA at 6.02.

The offense has been average with 23 RBIs (in three of the six games they have scored five or more runs), but so far that is not enough for them.

To this we must add that they are the team with the most errors committed so far with 10, so they are last in fielding percentage with .953.

Caribes will have a free day this Friday and from Saturday, October 19, a series of eight duels will begin at home, where they will have to look for the greatest number of victories to get out of the basement of the qualifying table.
