ARLINGTON, Texas, USA — José Altuve homered in his first three at-bats, including two off star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, fresh off the disabled list, and the Houston Astros routed a 14-1 Tuesday night to the Texas Rangers.
Venezuelan Altuve greeted Eovaldi with a home run in the first inning of the game. He capped the pitcher’s first outing since July 18 with another home run, into the left-field seats, off the 35th pitch, with one out in the second inning.
Altuve’s third home run of the game and his 15th of the season blew the ball into center field off Dane Dunning, a starter placed in relief so Eovaldi (11-4) might return to the mound without rehabbing following a strained right the right forearm.
“I don’t remember,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said when asked if he’d ever seen a player hit three home runs in the first three innings. “Probably not. Maybe Barry Bonds.”
Martín Maldonado hit two homers and Cuban Yordan Álvarez got his 24th home run of the season. The defending World Series champion Astros set a Globe Life Field record with six home runs and won their third straight series once morest the Rangers.
Texas, which hasn’t had a winning season since 2016, has lost 14 of 18 games. In late August, he lost the top seed in the AL West.
Framber Valdez (11-9) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings, walking four and striking out four.
For the Astros, Venezuelan Altuve went 5-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. The Dominican Jeremy Peña 6-3 with three runs scored. Cubans Yordan Álvarez 6-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, José Abreu 4-1 with three RBIs. Honduran Mauricio Dubón 5-2 with two runs scored and one towed. Puerto Rican Martín Maldonado went 5-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs.
