The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, said on Tuesday, July 30, that both former ambassador Edmundo González and opposition leader María Corina Machado “must go to jail.”

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) must act as it is acting, not only with the criminals or drug addicts to whom they give 40 dollars (…) their bosses must go to jail, those who ordered them, those who paid them. And when I say bosses, I am not only referring to María Corina Machado, but also to Edmundo González Urrutia,” said Rodríguez in a session of Parliament.

Diosdado Cabello also confirmed that as of the evening of July 29, Venezuelan authorities had arrested 10 opposition leaders for alleged links to acts of violence.

“As of last night (July 29), there are 730 (detained) terrorists who are on the streets, under the influence of who knows what. But at this point there are 10 (opposition) leaders detained. And they will remain detained because we have the conversations and we have the communications,” said Cabello.

The opposition party Voluntad Popular (VP) denounced on the morning of July 30 that its national political coordinator Freddy Superlano was “kidnapped” by Venezuelan state police officers.

“We must responsibly denounce to the country that just a few minutes ago our national political coordinator, Freddy Superlano, was kidnapped,” wrote Voluntad Popular on its account on the social network X.

The political party called on the international community to monitor the arrests of opposition groups in the country after the presidential elections on July 28.

“We alert the international community about an escalation of repression by the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro against activists of the democratic cause, who peacefully demand the publication of the electoral results that overwhelmingly give our elected president Edmundo González the victory,” concluded the VP’s message.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) Foro Penal reported 97 people arrested and five dead from gunshot wounds during protests that took place in various parts of Venezuela on July 29, in rejection of the results of the presidential elections offered by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

According to Alfredo Romero, president of the NGO, it was possible to verify that five people died from gunshot wounds, including two minors, aged 15 and 16, in the states of Zulia and Yaracuy.

In an interview for the radio station Blue Radio from Colombia on July 30, Romero explained that so far it cannot be determined who is responsible for the deaths of these protesters.

“There are other gunshot wounds that are difficult to determine today, as there are several throughout the country,” said the president of the Penal Forum.
