Rodas and his Executive Committee have been at the head of COG for 15 months, where they have fought a legal battle in search of remaining at the head of the institution, despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not endorsed their management.
This Friday, the former soccer player gave an account of what the legal process has been like and highlighted that they have taken “illegal actions under the banner of false patriotism by Willi Kaltschmitt and Gerardo Aguirre” whom he blamed for the suspension.
The position of the current group in power of the COG comes hours before the Assembly meets this Saturday in an Extraordinary manner to hear the resolution of the current Federated Sports Court (TEDEFE)which declared the election of Jorge Rodas and his slate as illegal.
The assembly members have expressed their disagreement with the actions taken by the current COG Executive Committee, especially after the statutes endorsed by the IOC approved on December 23, 2021 were repealed.
Rhodes argued that the Extraordinary Assembly this Saturday will be illegal and in the statement issued he recalled the judicial process that they have against Gerardo Aguirre, who sought re-election in the 2021 elections.
After 1 year and five months of suspension, the IOC has been clear that its statutes be respected to lift the punishment. However, the Constitutional Court (CC) has maintained the suspension of several articles that keep the problem trapped, despite the fact that TEDEFE presented the withdrawal in April 2023.
While the legal battle continues to be fought, Guatemalan athletes continue their preparation to participate as Independent Athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. So far there are 10 Guatemalans classified and the delegation could grow even more in the coming weeks.
Response to the accusation
When Willi Kaltschmitt was asked about the Rhodes declaration, rejection “flatly the accusation” issued during the press conference held this Friday.
“We are not responsible for the suspension carried out by the IOC, which occurred due to the irregularities that occurred due to the election of his person (Rodas), where only eight participated and where the other party (Gerardo Aguirre) was challenged, which three days later the Public Ministry declared spurious. The IOC acts ex officio not because of what people say, but because of the illegal acts that were carried out“he indicated.
“If Mr. Rodas says that he loves sport so much, then he should resign and everything will be completely resolved there.“said the honorary member of the IOC.
