Jorge Martin Takes on Michelin at World Cup Finals: Racing and Results

2023-11-19 19:55:51

Jorge Martin is now traveling to the World Cup final in Valencia in a pretty hopeless World Cup situation. He took a hard stance once morest tire supplier Michelin.

At the meeting with the GP journalists, Jorge Martin said following the disappointing tenth place at the Qatar GP that he had not yet spoken to those responsible at Michelin regarding the plight of the rock-hard rear tire, which had destroyed his chances for the title. Because 21 points can hardly be caught up once morest the consistent Pecco Bagnaia in Valencia next weekend.

“I just spoke to my team and told them: ‘It’s a shame that this had to happen to us today.’ But what happened is unacceptable, they need to improve. Now the MotoGP World Championship has been decided by a tire… Pecco said that this has happened to him too, but it has never happened to me. It’s a shame that it happened now of all times. It was difficult to hold on until the checkered flag under these circumstances. I’m proud that I brought the bike to the finish line because the situation was super complicated.”

“Everything was fine on the motorcycle,” assured the Pramac Ducati factory rider. «But if the tire doesn’t work, even the best motorcycle is of no use. I had the same feeling as on slippery Friday when the asphalt was still dirty. But today the slope was clean…”

“It’s hard to accept because yesterday I sprinted at a pace of 1:53.0 min, and on Sunday I was 1.2 seconds slower than the pace of the leaders. And I think I’m usually faster. That’s difficult to understand, we now have to analyze it carefully and ask the tire supplier a few questions.”

What feelings did Jorge feel during the 22-lap race? «At a certain point I mightn’t help but laugh. Because they didn’t beat me on the slopes. You can trust me: under the same conditions as on Saturday, I would have won once more today. Then came a phase where disappointment set in. It was an emotional rollercoaster that lasted 40 minutes. I’m certainly frustrated because I’m convinced that I deserved this World Cup. But today we lost a lot of our chances.”

Michelin has been supplying the standard tires since 2016, and almost every weekend certain drivers complain regarding tires not working or hard compounds that are softer than medium or vice versa.

But never before has such flawed quality decided a World Cup. And at Bridgestone, which supplied the standard tires from 2009 to the end of 2015, such complaints were never heard.

“I think they don’t know what happened themselves,” said Jorge Martin indignantly. “They want to be competitive and have no intention of influencing or deciding the World Cup in such a way. I don’t want to imagine anything else… Normally they should let us all drive under the same conditions. But I can’t lose 1.5 seconds of pace in 24 hours. I haven’t forgotten how to drive. You need to improve and analyze why this happened. You have to make sure it never happens once more.”
