Jorge Enrique Gómez Marín: A Leader in Biomedical Research and Infectious Diseases

Due to his spirit of knowledge and service, his vocation and that passion today, the Quindío scientist Jorge Enrique Gómez Marín, who has stood out worldwide, becomes one of the characters of the year in Quindío.

The current director of the Biomedical Research Center of the University of Quindío, since he was a child, he felt attracted to knowing why humans got sick, and what began as curiosity became the guideline of his life.

Graduated from the University of Quindío, to his resume he adds a master’s degree in tropical medicine, a doctorate in parasitology and a postdoctoral degree in molecular spectroscopy.

As a lover of health research, this doctor, teacher and researcher from the city of Armenia is recognized nationally and internationally for his studies on toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, opportunistic diseases in patients with HIV-AIDS, knowledge that has been polished year following year and with which it has been consolidated over time.

Not only because of his vocation, but also because of the passion and integrity that he has shown in each of his facets, the same ones that make it necessary to attach and know the positions held throughout his career. Among his countless contributions to medicine, he added that he was part of the country’s team for the development of a vaccine once morest Covid-19.

This is how he has stood out for being president of the Colombian Association of Infectious Diseases, director and founder of the biomedical sciences laboratory of the University of Quindío and the Research Center; recognizing that in various investigations he has been considered an international authority in toxoplasmosis studies. Likewise, his role as a full professor at UNAL, a doctor in the infectious disease unit at San Juan de Dios, part of the Institute of Health in the Tropics, and postgraduate director of the master’s degree in Health stands out. In addition to proposing and achieving the master’s degree in biomedical sciences at UQ and subsequently leading the idea of ​​​​a doctorate, first postgraduate degrees in the faculty of health sciences for this university. Likewise, within his achievements, he was highlighted in the ranking of Colombian scientists in 2016 for being part of numerous research projects worldwide.

With joy, it can be said that to this day not only does one of the local universities have a great in its area of ​​study, but also, this same one is in charge of instilling and transmitting in its students and researchers the same passion, the medicine, academia and research.
