BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Jorge Almirón stopped being the coach of the Boca Juniors first team this Sunday, one day following the Argentine club’s defeat in the final of the Copa Libertadores de América played at the Maracaná stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Almirón spent most of his career as a soccer player in Mexico. His time in Argentina’s A was with Deportivo Español in the 1996/1997 season. He began directing in the North American country in 2008. His most successful stage was with Lanús, a club with which he won three titles as a coach. In 2017, he led the Maroons to the final of the Copa Libertadores, which they ultimately lost to Gremio de Porto Alegre.
The now former Boca coach had just managed Elche in Spain with little success. He replaced Hugo Ibarra in this position. He debuted as coach of Boca with a 1-0 defeat once morest San Lorenzo on April 11, 2023.
