Jordanian media: A research team from the Kingdom has solved a mathematical puzzle that has been pending since 1949

The team, consisting of Professor Rushdi Khalil from the Department of Mathematics at Al-Zaytoonah University of Jordan, Drs. Mamoun Abu Hammad and Wassim Al-Shanti from the same university, and Dr. Abdulrahman Youssef from the Department of Mathematics at the American University of Sharjah, were able to solve this open and pending issue for decades.

The team was able to solve the mathematical problem after an effort that began in 2021, and was preceded by efforts by team members that began in 2015.

The research was published in a peer-reviewed journal in one of the most famous and highly ranked scientific research journals in mathematics, according to what one of the members of the research team, Dr. Mamoun Abu Hammad, said in an interview with Roya.

Abu Hammad added that “the Jordanian team was distinguished by solving the mathematical problem and proving it in 3 pages in a profound and scientific manner,” noting that “they were distinguished from one of the scientists who provided a solution to it in 27 pages, while the latter has not yet ruled.”

This problem is considered one of the most famous mathematical problems in mathematics, and is known to mathematicians as “The Invariant Subspace Problem for Separable Hilbert Spaces”.

The problem of the mathematical question is that it talks about a fixed subspace under the influence of a linear operator. This linear operator must be continuous on Hilbert spaces, and it is a question that goes back to the Hungarian scientist Neumann from the late 1940s.
