Jordan welcomes ICJ opinion: Israel must be held accountable

Amman – Jordan welcomed, on Friday, the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which considered the Israeli occupation “illegal” and demanded that Tel Aviv end its presence in the Palestinian territories, calling for Israel to be held accountable.

This came in two posts by Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on his account on the X platform, and a statement by the ministry, a copy of which was received by Anadolu Agency.

This comes in response to the Court’s advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967, which coincides with Israel’s launching of a devastating war on the Gaza Strip 287 days ago, leaving more than 128,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, in addition to more than 10,000 missing.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip in 1967.

Safadi wrote: “Israel’s response to the International Court of Justice rulings and the Knesset’s decision to prevent the Palestinian people from exercising their right to freedom also proves Israel’s complete disregard for international law.”

“Israel’s impunity must end, its war crimes must stop, and Israel must be held accountable,” he added.

Yesterday, Thursday, the Israeli Knesset (parliament) preempted the issuance of the court’s advisory opinion by voting by a majority in favor of a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, and claiming that “the establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the land of Israel would constitute an existential threat to Israel.”

In a second post, Safadi said: “We welcome the rulings of the International Court of Justice regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”

He added: “It is a clear ruling on the Palestinian people’s right to justice, freedom and the establishment of a state.”

He stressed that “the end of the occupation is the only path to peace that will guarantee the rights and security of all.”

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry considered in its statement that “the importance of this historic advisory opinion, which reflects the international will and international law in supporting the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent, sovereign state, and confirms that all states are obligated not to recognize the situation arising from the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories.”

Earlier on Friday, the International Court of Justice held a public hearing on the UN General Assembly’s request for the court to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.

The International Court of Justice said that “the continued presence of the State of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal,” according to a statement published by the United Nations on its website.

She explained that “international organizations, including the United Nations, are obligated not to recognize the legitimacy of this situation arising from the illegal presence of the State of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory.”

The court held that “the State of Israel is obliged to compensate for the damage caused to all natural or legal persons concerned in the occupied Palestinian territory.”

On 30 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories since 1967, how Israel’s practices affect the legal status of the occupation and what the legal consequences of this situation are for all States and the United Nations.

In the hearings held between 19 and 26 February 2024, 49 countries, including Turkey, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union, participated and orally presented their views on Israel’s occupation and annexation of the Palestinian territories to the Court’s Council.

The majority of countries participating in the hearings said that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and its practices towards the Palestinians are “illegal.”

The Israeli government has previously claimed that it has “the right to impose its sovereignty over the West Bank,” saying that “the Jewish people have the exclusive right to self-determination in these lands.”

International law prohibits Israel from annexing any parts of the West Bank, according to numerous UN statements in recent years.
