Marseille midfielder Jordan Veretout has been called up to the France team to replace defender Ferland Mendy, injured in a shin, the French Football Federation announced on the eve of the start of the June rally.

“Currently in treatment in Qatar due to pain in a tibia, Ferland Mendy will not be able to honor his summons to the France team”, explains the Federation in a press release. Coach Didier Deschamps called on Veretout (30 years old, 6 caps) for this gathering.

Two qualifying matches

“The Marseillais is expected on Saturday at noon, at the CNF Clairefontaine where the other players – with the exception of Alphonse Areola, winner of the Europa League Conference on Wednesday evening – will arrive tomorrow (Friday)”, adds the FFF.

This replacement of a left-back by a defensive midfielder suggests that Deschamps is counting on Eduardo Camavinga as a back-up at left-back, which he did at the last rally in March.

The Blues play two qualifying matches for Euro-2024 in June, once morest Gibraltar on June 16 in Portugal, and once morest Greece in Saint-Denis on June 19. They are currently at the top of their qualifying group, following two victories in March once morest the Netherlands (4-0) and Ireland (1-0).
