Jordan on Knesset’s rejection of Palestinian state: Serious violation of international law

Jordan – Jordan condemned the Israeli Knesset’s vote on Thursday in favor of a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, considering it a “new and serious violation of international law.”

The resolution claims that “the establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel would constitute an existential threat to Israel and its citizens, perpetuate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and destabilize the region.”

In May 1948, the State of Israel was established on occupied Palestinian lands, following the displacement of more than 750,000 Palestinians.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement received by Anadolu Agency that the ministry “condemned the Israeli Knesset’s approval of a proposal that opposes and aims to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

She stressed that this decision “constitutes new and serious violations of international law and a continued challenge to the international community.”

Last May, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting Palestine’s application for full membership in the international organization, and recommending that the Security Council reconsider the application. Israel announced its rejection of this resolution.

Many countries in the world, including the United States, an ally of Israel, support the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli), as a necessary step to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry stressed that “all decisions and steps issued by Israel, the occupying power, are null and void and must be cancelled, and do not change the reality and truth of its occupation of the Palestinian territories.”

She pointed out that “Israel’s continued efforts to deny the Palestinians’ inalienable right to their independent and sovereign state (…) do not bring security and peace to the region.”

The ministry called for “effective international action to deter these actions, stop Israel’s ongoing war on the Palestinians in their land, and stop the war crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.”

In this context, she denounced the “continuous targeting of civilians seeking refuge in UNRWA schools and shelters.”

The Knesset decision comes at a time when Israel, with American support, has been waging a war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in more than 128,000 Palestinian deaths and injuries, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing.

Coinciding with its war on Gaza, the Israeli army and settlers escalated their attacks in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which led to the killing of 576 Palestinians, the injury of 5,350, and the arrest of 9,700, according to official Palestinian sources.

During the Israeli war on Gaza, Armenia, Slovenia, Spain, Norway and Ireland officially recognized Palestine, bringing the number of countries recognizing it to 149 out of 193 countries in the United Nations.

Since November 2012, Palestine has had “non-member observer state” status at the United Nations, and the United States’ use of its “veto” power in the Security Council prevents the Palestinians from obtaining full membership.
